Advent - Day 1

Day 1 : Greg & Shannon Pierce

Scripture : Deuteronomy 18:15-19

Start by reading Deuteronomy 18:15-19. As we prepare for this Christmas season, we want to prepare our hearts, minds, and families to pause and focus on Christ. As Moses prophesied that God would send a Prophet like Him, a fellow Israelite, the nation began to look forward to this promise being fulfilled. This Prophet would speak God’s words and He would speak in God’s name. He would tell them everything God has commanded. God Himself will hold all people accountable to His words. As the Israelites looked forward to this, many of them missed His first coming. Peter, in Acts 3, tells the Israelites they did not recognize that Jesus was the Prophet. They missed that Jesus was this promise fulfilled. They had a preconceived idea of what this Prophet would be and do. They missed who He was as a person and as God, they denied His words as God’s words, and they denied that He spoke in God’s name. And God will hold them accountable. This Christmas, let us make sure we don’t look past who Jesus is. As God, He was born a baby and grew to speak the words of God. The whole world is accountable by God to Jesus’ words and actions.

What are some specific distractions in our lives during the Christmas season that keep us from experiencing who Jesus is and what He has done for us?

God, I thank you so much for Jesus. As this season of Christmas comes, give us the strength and the focus to not be distracted by all the things going on - the shopping, the materialism, the lights, the vacations - but let us focus on You! I pray our family makes You the center of our lives and that we never miss You working in us and through us and around us. Amen!

Choose a family member that you would like to encourage and make them a card telling them why you love them.

Be sure to share pictures of you, your friends, and your family in action!
